City Life
City Life proposes slow feeling as active, intentional resistance against the discomfort of our own bodies and the environments they interact with. A durational, looping piece, it sits between performance, installation, and the choreographic (Jenn Joy, 2014).
Siobhan Davies herself gave great feedback after watching the work, stating she "was very moved by City Life [...] Their gift of concentration to each other and to us was immense. The whole building felt ingrained by what was happening during the public showing."
The score for the piece is deceptively simple. Move as slowly as you can while still remaining in relation with the other performer. When they meet in the middle, the performers exchange clothes. They then perform the score once more in reverse. This is repeated four times in total for a total runtime of approx. 89 minutes.
City Life mirrors the music it uses, City Life by Steve Reich, following an arch-like, symmetric A-B-C-B-A structure. It represented the culmination of the six month NEXT Choreography course, hosted by Siobhan Davies Studio, and was performed there on the 23rd of March.
